One Book Away From an Episode of Hoarders

I enjoy horror, thrillers, urban fantasy, steampunk, science fiction, mystery, speculative and dystopian fiction, humor, and paranormal romance (I like more plot than smut in my fiction, although I'm definitely not a prude) among others. about me In October, every October, I marathon 100+ horror movies so I'm not as active that month or November either (NaNoWriMo). My rating system is as follows: 1 star - I'd like my time back, thank you. 2 stars - I didn't care for it but I don't feel cheated. I'm not likely to subject myself to any of this author's other works. 3 stars - I enjoyed my time in the story and will more than likely read another book by the author some day. 4 stars - I really enjoyed this story and will definitely be interested in anything else the author writes. 5 stars - The real world didn't exist while I was reading this. I will likely maim anyone who interrupts me while I'm devouring everything in this author's bibliography

How Beauty Saved the Beast (Tales of the Underlight, #2)
Jax Garren
Down These Strange Streets - Simon R. Green, Diana Gabaldon, S.M. Stirling, Laurie R. King, Carrie Vaughn, Gardner R. Dozois, Joe R. Lansdale, Glen Cook, Charlaine Harris, John Maddox Roberts, Melinda M. Snodgrass, Lisa Tuttle, Steven Saylor, Bradley Denton, Conn Iggulden, M.L.N. Hanover, George R.R The stories were kind of hit and miss, much what I expected from a collection of short stories.
Redshirts - John Scalzi It's not without its flaws but overall it was certainly worth a read.

Laugh out loud funny at several points and it prompted me to put several of his other books on my TBR list.

If you know what a Redshirt is, then you'll probably enjoy this book.
If you're a fan of Wil Wheaton, then you'll probably enjoy this book.

If you know that you are likely to be distracted to the point of RageQuit by the overuse of a word, then I wouldn't recommend this. The only nitpicky negative critique I have about this book is that is a dialogue heavy book and the word "said" is used to the point of annoyance.

Regardless of that, it is a fun book and I enjoyed it.
Walt's Comfort Food Recipes from Mel's Diner - Robert Thornhill Just a nitpicky thing but being from the gulf coast of the US and being a proficient cook, I've gotta point out... It's not a "rue" it's a roux.

It doesn't matter if you're making gravy, cream soup, or gumbo, it's still spelled roux.
Warm Bodies: A Novel - Isaac Marion, Kevin Kenerly Ok, zombie Romeo and survivor Juliet kind of story. I expected to be kind of cheesy and I had low expectations for this book.

I did not expect to be in awe of the words, the flow... It was like music or wind. This was not the next War and Peace or anything but I absolutely loved it.

I loved R and his eloquent inner monologues.

“Are my words ever actually audible, or do they just echo in my head while people stare at me, waiting? I want to change my punctuation. I long for the exclamation marks, but I'm drowning in ellipses.” - R

If you're on the fence, I'd say go ahead and give it a try.
Pure - Julianna Baggott, Khristine Hvam, Joshua Swanson, Kevin T. Collins This story started out slowly. It didn't lag but it almost leisurely built the world around my mind. I was distracted by the descriptions and varying viewpoints and then suddenly I realized that I was quite trapped by the story and characters within.

This is a dark and gritty world (not as much as some I've read but still...) and there are mutations, human and monsters alike, lurking throughout. I loved the dimensions of the characters and it was overall an excellent read (or listen, as the case may be).
Mate Claimed - Jennifer Ashley You know, I started this series when the first book was a book of the month for a group I'm in. It sounded ok and the library had it available immediately. I had no idea that it would quickly become one of my favorite series.

I can't wait until the next one comes out. :)
Masks - Evangeline Anderson Sweet little smutlette
Choose Your Own Fashion Adventure: From Stoop to Stitch - Rowena Zita I loved Choose Your Own Adventure books when I was growing up.

It was free. It wasn't so bad that I want my time back.

Unfortunately, these are the only things I can think to say about this book. I wasn't interested in the story. I couldn't bring myself to care enough to even find out all 15 endings.

I think I discovered five before I deleted it from my kindle.

Deadly Consequences - Jude Pittman Jude Pittman's third Kelly McWinter PI mystery, published by Books We Love, has Kelly McWinter and Gillian Tanner keeping a promise, taking their first vacation as a couple at Bubba’s Paradise Lodge. Of course, the fact that Cam Belscher, the owner of the Hideaway and feisty redhead Stella Davis have picked this particular paradise to tie the knot is the icing on the wedding cake.

Flash forward to the middle of the night. The sound of Bubba Tate banging the hell out of the cabin door is enough to put a damper on any vacation, and when the reason for Bubba's late night intrusion turns out to be the murder of one of Gillian’s stableboys back at her riding stable in Fort Worth, the wedding trip is over. Paradise is in the rear view mirror of the 747 taking Kelly and Gillian back home to Texas.

The small community of Indian Creek is rocked by nasty doings at Eagle Mountain Lake: a dirty rotten snake peddling child porn, a psychopath killer and a monster who beat a pretty teenage girl over the head and left her for dead.

Kelly and his old partner Augustus Graham are hard pressed to discover the truth disguised by the lies and mis-directions hidden in this intricate whodunit. Kelly is desperate to solve these crimes before Gillian sinks in the muck that someone is dumping on her riding stable.
Pleasure Unbound - Larissa Ione I am in no way shape or form a prude and I really shouldn't have been surprised but this particular book seems to be more porn than plot. By page 27, two complete strangers, not to mention enemies, were having sex. (2 stars - 1/24/11)

Edit: I'm giving it another try to see if now that I'm in a more appropriate state of mind, I will enjoy it.

Much better once I was in the mood for it. Honestly, still way more sex than I like in my PNRs but since the main characters are incubus (incubi? incubuses?) it's okay. I'm planning on reading the next one in the series, since I own it already.
Born of Silence (The League) - Sherrilyn Kenyon
Poor Darling
Darkness Dawns - Dianne Duvall It's good but not great. Regardless, I did actually enjoy the book.

It's a paranormal romance and as such, it follows the formula all too well. Unless this is your first foray into the land of PnR, you know basic storyline.

"Loner/surly supernatural creature meets plain jane and they fall madly in love. Snarky humor, angst, bad guys to defeat, personal issues to overcome, and of course a happily ever after (or at least a happily for now)."

However, that doesn't mean that it is a bad formula. It's all in the execution, not the skeleton. Damsel (mostly) wasn't in distress and she does some rescuing of her own. The good guy vampires are unbelievably hot alpha-males but all organic and eco-conscious. That's not a bad thing for me but, I'm a bit of a hippie so its all in your perception. I did like our heroine although she's not in my top ten favorites or anything.

It was good enough though that I bought the second and the third in the series although not so good that I've read them yet.
Intergalactic Affair - Kelly Wallace Sweet fluffy little thing.
How to Date an Alien - Magan Vernon My first instinct was to say Twilight mixed with Men In Black but that's not quite fair.

It was a fluffy star-crossed teenaged lovers (who are not actually having sex). Our human girl is book smart, a loner and also is brave to the point of stupidity. Our alien boy is quiet, intense, and spent the last 60-70 years on Earth being 18.

Not at all like Twilight. My apologies.

Anyway, I actually did enjoy this little book. It was not a bad way to spend an afternoon at all. Just don't expect any real substance. It's junk food and there is nothing wrong with that.
More than a Man - Emily Ryan-Davis, Elise Logan I admit it. I bought this book with fiendish glee and a bit of morbid curiosity.

Then I loaned it to a friend with a maniacal cackle.
Masked by Moonlight - Nancy Gideon I liked the setting. I liked the story. I liked Max quite a bit.

I did not like CeCe. I spent 85% of the book alternating between wanting to slap her or shake some sense into her.

I'll read the second one. Maybe the issue will work themselves out.
