One Book Away From an Episode of Hoarders

I enjoy horror, thrillers, urban fantasy, steampunk, science fiction, mystery, speculative and dystopian fiction, humor, and paranormal romance (I like more plot than smut in my fiction, although I'm definitely not a prude) among others. about me In October, every October, I marathon 100+ horror movies so I'm not as active that month or November either (NaNoWriMo). My rating system is as follows: 1 star - I'd like my time back, thank you. 2 stars - I didn't care for it but I don't feel cheated. I'm not likely to subject myself to any of this author's other works. 3 stars - I enjoyed my time in the story and will more than likely read another book by the author some day. 4 stars - I really enjoyed this story and will definitely be interested in anything else the author writes. 5 stars - The real world didn't exist while I was reading this. I will likely maim anyone who interrupts me while I'm devouring everything in this author's bibliography

How Beauty Saved the Beast (Tales of the Underlight, #2)
Jax Garren
Cloak and Silence - Sherrilyn Kenyon Short and not perfect but it fills me with such joy to get back into the Ichidian universe. I'm floating on a cloud of yay
Fifty Shades of Grey - E.L. James I finally succumbed to the hype and got this from my library's ebook collection.

It wasn't good. It wasn't awful. There were some parts that were interesting but mostly it was like watching a horrific accident. You just couldn't look away.

Not at all a healthy relationship between the two leads. I didn't dislike Christian or Anastasia but I think they could use some counseling. I'm not stating this because of the D/s aspects of the book. It is obvious to me, as the reader, that there are some deep seated issues that both of our characters have.

A flawed character is interesting but I can't bring myself to care about whether either of them resolve their problems.
A Potion to Die For - Heather Blake A cute start to a new cozy mystery series. I chuckled out loud at some of the antics of the southern characters. I never saw "whodunit" until the end and then it made perfect sense.
Pleating for Mercy - Melissa Bourbon Great start to a cozy mystery series. Cute story, likeable characters and imho, it was over way too quickly. I can't wait to see what is in store for the Cassidy ladies in the future installments. :)

Wicked as They Come - Delilah S. Dawson I knew I was going to like this book less than 10 pages in. A hospice nurse finds a locket at an Estate Sale and is transported to Sang. Sang is an alternate universe and also about 100 years behind us. Then we meet Criminy Stain. *sigh* Tish, our MC, meets him immediately.

There are bludmen, bludbunnies (which still tickles me a bit), bludrats, and pretty much anything else blud-you can think of. Except birds, because apparently, that’s just silly. :) Carnival folk and real magic round out this new world and its inhabitants.

Criminy is, in his words, “a gypsy. A rogue. As wicked as they come.” and that was when I realized that I was completely in love with this character.

I’ve deleted half of this review at least twice because of spoilers. But I could go on and on. I fell into this reality and didn’t want to come out. Needless to say, I thoroughly enjoyed this book and will definitely be continuing the series.
Nice Girls Don't Live Forever - Molly Harper Any time I fall into a reading slump, where book after book bore me and I start to feel like I'm doomed to read nothing but mediocre plots with half formed characters, I then pick up a Molly Harper book.

Her books never fail to make me laugh out loud. I love her characters, the wit, the plot lines. I recommend her books to everyone who asks, "Who is your favorite author?" Honestly, I don't have a favorite author but her books are always worth reading to me.

In audio version, Amanda Ronconi nails it. EVERY. BOOK. The combination of the two is nothing short of magical.

Review: Jane is having trust issues in her relationship. Add to that the weaselly nephew of Mr. Wainright showing up, her family drama, a psychotic stalker, a Stepford-type group of Chamber of Commerce Courtneys, and the grand opening of Specialty Books it all adds up to a great read.

I laughed out loud, I groaned in sympathy and I basically loved every minute of it. The gangs all here. I recommend this book and every other book by this author.
We Have Always Lived in the Castle - Shirley Jackson I need a specific shelf for books like this. Its not horror but its much more than just "fiction"
Tall, Dark & Dead - Tate Hallaway I don't know. It was an enjoyable read but I feel like it was missing something. Everything just felt too easy. I love a HEA as much as the next person but it just felt empty to me.

I'll probably give the next one a try but I'm not eager to read it anytime soon.
Extinction Point (Extinction Point, #1) - Paul Antony Jones At first, this book kinda reminded of a story that I started writing for NaNoWriMo a few years ago. What happens when the entire earth’s population dies? Birds, bugs, dogs, people... One survivor, searching for others.

My story, never finished, is just sitting unused on a zip drive. And there are no aliens.

This one is better. We have the usual worries. Food, water, first aid, how long will the power last...
Our MC, is a reporter in NYC when the “blood rain” falls. The strange precipitation kills every sentient creature it comes in contact with. We don’t even see any aliens until after the halfway point, and then they aren’t what you expect. There is a lot of alone time for our character, and not much conversation, being as this is a global event.

I admit that its not perfect. Its self published so there are a few things that could certainly be polished by a good editor but there was nothing so wrong with it that I was ever drawn out of the story. I’m definitely interested in reading the next book.
Nightfall - Ellen Connor The cover made me think it was a bodice-ripper and the synopsis seemed more urban fantasy than dystopian. It's been on my shelf at home FOREVER.

I really liked this book. It basically chronicles the start of the Dark Age where all technology fails and horrible beasts hunt the survivors. We follow one of these groups of survivors as they try to survive the change and adapt to the new world.

This book is dark and gritty with very little levity but it never felt heavy and oppressive. There was some romance and some sex but not nearly as much as I imagined from the cover.
I enjoyed getting to know the characters and being a fly on the wall in this world.

I'll be seeking the next two in the near future if nothing else to see what becomes of Penny and Tru.
Demon Hunting in Dixie - Lexi George I totally enjoyed this book. It definitely fell into the insta-love category though so if that bugs you, avoid this one.

It was a humorous PnR full of southern stereotypes (just because it’s a stereotype, doesn’t mean it isn’t accurate). Everything involving Dwight Farris’ funeral, and his loved ones, made me chuckle inappropriately.

Hannah ALA is quite the supernatural hot spot and two immortal warriors have come to town to investigate, and defeat the EVIL. (Muah ha ha) I loved Adara, her family and friends (and most of the town, for that matter) Even her animal companions were likable.

I’m definitely gonna read the next one because I really liked Evie and Blondy needs to get his ass in gear, suck it up and get back in the game.
Obsidian - Jennifer L. Armentrout I liked this book but there were definite tones of Twilightness about it.

New girl in town, meets loner siblings, super attractive boy who is openly hostile towards her, overly friendly sister.
BUT... still, aliens and fights and even with all the action it was a bit light in tone. I liked it enough to where I'll read the next in the series
Paranormalcy - Kiersten White This is the typical YA Paranormal Romance book. It's fluffy and made me very happy when I was reading it. Evie has shades of early Buffy going on. She's very girly but I didn't find that annoying. It helps that she's strong enough to fend for herself, usually.

I loved Lend too. The cover is very pretty but it doesn't quite match the story.

This book follows Evie as she goes through her jobs at the ICPA as the only known agent (or person) who can see through the glamours that paranormals cast. Then all hell breaks lose. Tricky fae abound. Although there are plenty of deaths, I never got the feeling that the book was heavy. I'm definitely going to read the rest of the trilogy.
Angel's Ink (The Asylum's Tales, #1) - Jocelynn Drake When I first started this book, I was under the impression that this was written in a woman's POV. The woman on the cover isn't our MC, like I originally thought. She's trouble.

I was feeling lukewarm towards this story at about 45% in but it really picked up pace at about the halfway point. I liked the characters and having ink myself, thought that the idea of mixing potions into ink was pretty intriguing.

The characters were my favorite part though. I probably will continue this series later in time but I don't have the urge to get my hands on the next in the series immediately.
Kiss of Frost - Jennifer Estep This book started almost immediately after Touch of Frost when we're thrown into Gwen's training with Logan.

I liked this book enough to finish it in one day although I have to admit that I knew almost immediately that you-know-who was a bad guy. I was a bit surprised about the identity of the attacker from the library (as well as the reasoning behind the attacks) and thought it was a bit excessive, even for Mythos Academy.

I'm definitely going to continue the series.
Skinwalker - Faith Hunter I don’t know for sure but it felt like this book had a bit of “first book syndrome” going on. I felt lukewarm towards it at the beginning and honestly, I skimmed a bit when she was describing rooms. The inner dialogue of the Beast took some getting used to as well.

I did enjoy the characters and I liked Jane. The last quarter of the book really took off and I couldn't put it down until after the epilogue. I liked all the nicknames too, Bruiser and Troll especially. I liked Leo and I really hope the twins make another appearance in a later book.
